Around the world, builders are putting modern twists into ancient construction methods that employ the hearty hemp.

The need to develop biodegradable, compostable alternatives to petroleum-based plastics is pressing. With today’s consumption rates, it’s simply not feasible to keep pumping out conventional plastics, each with a lifespan of 500 years or more.

LEGO wants to change the material it uses to make its branded toy bricks loved by children around the world. 

"The material, Hempcrete, isn't common, but it’s certainly earned its pedigree in the UK," says presenter Kevin McCloud.

"It’s a mixture of hemp, which is the stuff they use on the floor of equestrian arenas and is like finely chipped bark and lime."

Hemp uses is known to be cultivated specifically for industrial purposes in years gone. In fact, it was used in China and the Middle East back in 8000 BC. Hemp plant has a fiber that is used to manufacture a wide range of textiles and even seeds that were good for consumption.

Livable 3D-printed homes are already planned for construction in the Netherlands. Project Milestone will build five sustainable, 3D-printed homes made of concrete. Residents of the Dutch town of Bosrijk could move into the first ever livable 3D-printed homes by next year.
