Root & Shroom – The Story, The Science & The Shot

Every good idea starts with a spark.

Ours began in the most unexpected of places...a hospital ward.

When my wife fell seriously ill early 2025, she spent three weeks in hospital on a feeding tube.

Those days felt long and heavy, and in between visiting hours I’d do what any husband would do, try to find something, anything, that might bring her comfort and strength.

I’d pop into M&S and pick up ginger shots, thinking the fiery kick of ginger and a hit of “vitamin C” might help her on the road to recovery.

And they did help - but there was a catch.

We later discovered that the “vitamin C” wasn’t the nourishing kind you find in oranges or acerola cherries – it was citric acid, an artificial preservative that isn’t doing your body any favours.

It was a shortcut, a marketing trick dressed up as goodness.

And that’s when the penny dropped: if something as simple and healing as a ginger shot could be that beneficial, then why not make one fresh, clean, and completely free of preservatives?

That’s where Root & Shroom was born.

The Shot

Our Root & Shroom is small but mighty. Each 60ml bottle contains:

Why Lion’s Mane?

Ginger might give Root & Shroom its fiery kick, but Lion’s Mane gives it its soul. Known scientifically as Hericium erinaceus, Lion’s Mane is one of nature’s most extraordinary fungi. For centuries, it has been prized in traditional medicine for its ability to support the brain, nervous system, and overall vitality.

What makes Lion’s Mane so unique is its compounds called hericenones and erinacines. These are believed to stimulate the production of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF), a protein essential for the growth, repair and survival of nerve cells.

1. Take one 60ml shot of Root & Shroom.

2. Pour into your favourite mug.

3. Top up with hot (not boiling) water.

4. Stir, sip & enjoy.

The ginger warms you from the inside out, the apple and pear bring gentle sweetness, and the lemon keeps it refreshing. Add a drizzle of local honey if you fancy an extra treat. It’s the perfect drink for chilly mornings, sore throats, or when you just want to feel cocooned.

We even added 2 shots to a Turkey Stir-Fry (with carrots & Broccoli) & it was fantastic!! 

Why Only Markets?

You won’t find Root & Shroom sitting on a supermarket shelf. And that’s on purpose.

Freshness is everything. Preservatives, pasteurisation and additives are what allow big-brand shots to sit around for weeks or months. That’s not what we’re about. We make our shots in small batches, by hand – pouring, bottling, and labelling everything ourselves. They go straight from us to you.

That’s why Root & Shroom is only available at local markets and events across Aberdeenshire. It’s as fresh as fresh can be – and it’s where we get to share the story with you face-to-face.
